Before you even start your mower there is a key item that must be taken care of. Its not the gas in the tank or even checking the oil (which are both very important). It is all about the blade. Your lawn mower blade (or blades) is the most important piece of your lawn mower to maintain for the quality of the cut. It is like the tires on a car, its the part that actually contacts the grass. You might be thinking "I have cut my lawn for years without sharpening my lawn mower blade so why start now?" Very valid point, if all you care about is that your lawn is shorter than it was when you started then you are correct it will do the job. On the other hand if you actually care about the health of your lawn then you should keep reading. The reason we use sharp razors. As they become dull instead of a clean cut you get a ripped, shredded, tear of a cut. The problem with lawn mowers and razors are there is nothing holding the other side of the grass or hair so if it is not sharp it just pulls and tears it. On a lawn when this happens the tips of the grass turn brown where it was ripped. This stunts growth, promotes mold, allows weeds to grow, and causes a yellow looking lawn. After reading that I hope you plan to start sharpening your lawn mower blade. I would recommend sharpening it once a year in the spring for a residential mower. The best way to sharpen it at home is with a bench vice and an angle grinder. Just secure one side of the blade and use your angle grinder on the other. Do your best to match the angle that is already on the blade because it is set to give you the maximum longevity and cutting ability. Once both sides are completed try to balance the blade on your finger. If it is imbalanced that will lead to excessive wear on the spindle of the lawn mower. If that is the case just grind more off the heavy side. Then just re-attach your blade and your off the the races for a green lawn all year long.
